Goodness me, it is almost a week since I posted last. I have been noting stories direct to Blogger but I've not got round to editing and tidying - so I'd better get on and do that right now.
Some details about a powerful computer system here - Earth Simulator, supercomputer while this BBC story Lost Moon-landing tape found is also (loosely) about pushing technology to the limit.
From the First Amendment Center (official or not?) an article titled - Freedom flees in terror from Sept. 11 disaster. On the same topic we are told by the Washington Post that Phil Zimmerman feels guilt over PGP in wake of WTC attacks Attacks Toll Add to a Programmer's Grief. More about privacy - Google have acquired technology to allow them to let users personalise searches but it seems (suprise) that this may cut across privacy too - Google and privacy. And another one concerning search engines, this time following data about most popular items requested - Terrorists knock sex off search engine hit lists.
Three links from The Register next. Their first story pointed to an article on ZDnet about IE and file systems which then got some mail which in turn got more mail! Here they are:
Another Register story - How much email is there?.
With so many links it would be strange not to have something about Microsoft. This guy isn't happy with MS A punitive puppeteer? but it is hardly surprising with their latest changes to software licensing affecting so many users - Users rip MS licence changes.
To finish, here is a brilliant link - Monty Python and the Holy Grail in Lego. A good, fast connection is useful.

A very quick post tonight - I want to go and see the 'Old Grey Whistle Test, 30 years on' programme on TV!
A quick link to Europa - The European Union On-Line.
Great stuff here at Tom's Hardware, Hot Spot - How Modern Processors Cope With Heat Emergencies. Wish I'd got time, money and space to do this stuff. Reminds me of being a nipper taking those watches apart!
And as always Richard Stallman has an interesting view on things. Slashdot : Thousands Dead, Millions Deprived of Liberties.
G'nite all.

Well then - quite a few days since the last post. Obviously there has been the WTC and Pentagon terrorist attack on the 11th and lots of work. I did consider linking to news, stories and pictures concerning the tragic events but decided otherwise.
Not many other items have caught my eye though but we'll try these:
An interesting site about OSes(!) - OSNews.com - Exploring the Future of Computing
Slashdot pointed to this - Technology Review - It's Time for Clockless Chips. Took me back a bit as I remember reading about all this when I was an ARM user with my Acorn Archimedes (A440) and followed tech news about the Acorn mob. I just had to look for some other links to tie in here so we have - Steve Furber - AMULET Group Member and The AMULET Group.
To finish, a Register story about Microsoft XP requirements. How much memory will it need to allow the PC to actually run at a half-decent speed?
Enough for now - I ought to update the CCS blog too!

An update for the end of the week - and it contains items useful and odd. So, in no particular order we have:
- Try some hairstyles at Mullets Galore. (Some problems with page links)
- There is NO way to properly introduce this so - if you are not easily offended - try The Camel-Toe Report Home.
- Serious matters now in EU report on Echelon.
- News item here about a Middle-English dictionary, apparently not for public access though, Word Wizards' Rare Feat. Interesting item all the same.
- "Online tests for teenagers" is from the BBC about national tests being carried out online - a reaction to news items about 'cheating' headteachers.
- Will it, won't it - according to a BBC item E-paper is moving closer.
- For my students a link to Advanced ICT Topics in a Nutshell , a developing website.

Starting back at school means I've had a short break from keeping this up-to-date - but now I'm back!
Here's a CNet story about Star Office and whether it might be able to compete with MS Office.
Here's someone putting forward an article that argues against Stephen Hawking's idea that we need to genetically engineer ourselves to keep up with AI.
And here's Episode 23 of the BOFH - yippee!
And that's it for tonight.

I thought I would create a little post now, early evening after first day back at school, before getting on with some preparation.
And that will have to do for tonight.
- A homemade computer the Sbox is just made for emulation.
- Only visit here if you don't mind annoying advert pop-ups but lots of emulation stuff at Arcade@Home(tm)
- Fast wireless links at Gb speeds - read this CNN article about UWB Ultra Wideband Radio and see how noise can have a use.
- Titled 'All Change in the mobile market' this Register article notes (among other things) the rebranding of Cellnet to O2.
- A sad little tale here about BeOS and why it was unable to survive.>/LI>
- Stephen Hawking is warning about the dangers of allowing computer AI to get ahead of human development - if he's worried on that score, I guess we all should be too!
And that will have to do for tonight.

So - while MusicMatch transfers some CDs to MP3 (my own ones of course) I can get down to some editing.
The top story has to be England winning by a large margin against Germany earlier tonight. I was basically flabbergasted ("my flabber has never been so gasted") when I turned on the TV news and heard this. But well done to the players and here's the details from BBC Sports pages.
While sorting out MP3s today I went -alooking again for data about SuperPinkyMandy, but got no further than normal. Still, gives me a chance to drop this link in here to a Beth Orton fan site with a surpisingly original title! Somebody's Pages - A Beth Orton Fansite.
With great glee I can follow up an earlier story I noted the other day, so the "I told you so" department can reveal: ZDNet |UK| - News - Story - New server patches may hinder functionality. (You can't make up any better stuff than comes from Redmond already!)
Came across 'Bucky Balls' several years ago following up some stuff for a Science teacher. So I had to put this link in here: ZDNet |UK| - News - Story - Scientists bounce bucky balls toward quantum computing.
Quite an interesting article here making the case AGAINST DivX movies becoming the next hot trading and sharing on the Internet : The Register DivX movies etc.
I don't always understand everything about cutting-edge technology but I still enjoy reading about where things are going, like this article. Motorola Designs Tools for Ultra-Small Chips.
With wireless access becoming more common you would think security features would be better by now but they are not. This article discusses how NASA dealt with this problem.
Enough for now - need some sleep so I'm ready for Belgium GP.
