Final day of the term Half-term holiday at the end of May and I'm preparing the postings for the rest of the term. As these will be my last few weeks doing this I thought I'd finish and look back at a couple of favourite items from the past year or so.
One of the earliest 'theme' weeks was in November 2002 used the History Channel's 'On This Day' feature. (An idea I repeated at the end of January 2003 using the BBC version.)
Of the 10 items used the most poignant has to be the one about the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion because at the end of the week the Columbia Shuttle was also lost.
Additional daily item - look at the online Pepys Diary for today here (available after 11pm each day). You can read about Samuel Pepys Diary here and see who, what and why it is being posted as a weblog in the present.

Penultimate day of the term Half-term holiday at the end of May and I'm preparing the postings for the rest of the term. As these will be my last few weeks doing this I thought I'd finish and look back at a couple of favourite items from the past year or so.
Somewhere amongst all these postings I mentioned I've always liked numbers - the same is true of words as the article near the end of December 2001 shows - a look back to Word-A-Day.
I still get the daily mailings which, in the week before this half-term holiday, was about words that originate in African languages. They were zombie, veld, juju, spoor and mumbo jumbo.
I've used Google cache for that last link - scroll down to the highlighted word and the others follow after it. Additional daily item - look at the online Pepys Diary for today here (available after 11pm each day).
